Printing and Misprinting

Abstract This book provides the first comprehensive and interdisciplinary guide to the complex relationship linking textual production in print, technical and human faults, and printers’, correctors’, and authors’ more or less successful attempts at emendation. In twenty-four chapters, it presents new evidence on what we can learn from misprints in relation to publishers’ practices, printing and pre-publication procedures, and editorial strategies between 1450 and 1650. Contributors focus on texts, images, and layout of incunabula, sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century books issued throughout Europe. Coverage extends from the learned output of humanist printers to vernacular publications of many different kinds.
